Buckman Bridge in Jacksonville, Florida
The Buckman Bridge in Jacksonville carries traffic on I-295 across the St. Johns River. The bridge was named named for Henry Holland Buckman, a legislator and attorney in Florida who played a major part in establishing a state road system.
The Buckman Bridge is approximately 3.2 miles in length and travels east-west, but the eastbound (southbound) and westbound (northbound) lanes are each built on separate structures. The bridge is of beam-type construction.
Around 1995, the Buckman Bridge was expanded from just two lanes in each direction, to four lanes in each direction plus breakdown lanes. Rush-hour traffic delays are common due to two busy exits within a half mile of both ends of the bridge.
Downtown Jacksonville and Naval Air Station Jacksonville are both visible from the bridge to the north. To the south of the bridge, the Georgia-Pacific paper mill in Palatka can be seen on a clear day.
